Hey all,
The Great Backyard Bird Count starts tomorrow and goes through Monday, so
there's no better time to get out there and go birding. The name is a
little misleading, though; any bird, seen anywhere, counts.
Last year 612 species were reported nationwide, and over 6.5 million birds
were counted. The web site is:

The official tally for Virginia last year was 176 species seen, an all
time high. Kudos to the folks who went out and found Golden Eagles and
Red-cockaded Woodpeckers! The only Alcids were Razorbill so Brian
Patteson's pelagic trip this Saturday should be good for some extras. And
there's that Snowy Owl at Dulles Airport. Maybe a Black Rail in Suffolk?
I'm going to put my Don Quixote hat on and go looking for Long-eared Owls.
Have fun out there,
John Fox
