"Fear and Philosophy"
By Ame Suisei and Oridian Starfire

***Takes place before the 1/8/06 Sim***

Ame glanced around the bridge, hoping that they wouldn't notice him. He had
heard the first officer release the locks on the turbolift system and knew he
could make his escape.. If they and whatever entity had been riding herd over
them didn't spot him first..

Sickbay seemed to be finally calming down after the harrowing incident with
that weird entity which still left Oridian rather confused by the whole ordeal.
No one could tell who or what was going on. His swords on his belt, Oridian did
his best to calm everyone down and finally it seemed to be working.

Ame crept along the outer ring of the bridge, hoping the others wouldn't notice
him. He didn't have his weapons and his hand to hand wasn't the best, he
couldn't get into a fight in this situation. He finally made it to the lift and
entered and hit the close doors button as soon as he was fully past the doors.

He looked around and it was easy to see he was alone in the lift.. "Deck 7,
section gamma" If he was going to find a safe place he was going to need his
weapons and his tools wouldn't hurt either.

Oridian paused over Sam's unconscious form on one of the biobeds. What had this
creature done to make him act in such a way? He thought to himself as he looked
him over. It makes no sense, but then again the mind is a terribly powerful
thing.

Ame exited the lift and sprinted down the corridor, hoping to make it to his
quarters unseen. He needed those supplies. If he was ever going to find a
defensible position he needed the supplies. He glanced up and down the corridor
as he stood outside his door, he saw no-one coming either way so he knew it was
safe to enter.

He glanced around the piles of junk that filled up his quarters and saw some
things he needed. He grabbed his cloak and threw it on then started filling the
internal pockets with tools and other equipment he could use. Finishing he
started to turn towards the door when he noticed his beat-up weapon and grabbed
it fitting it to the specialized pocket he had made for it in the cloak. Now he
could defend himself at least until he got to his destination and set up a nice
defensible position.

Before he left he walked over to the one of the wall panels and snuck a command
into the computer so while still seeing his com-badge it wouldn't pay attention
to it unless someone directly commanded it to.

"Relax everyone relax, everything seems to be under control!" Oridian spoke
calmly to incoming crowd of wounded and bruised crewmembers as the nurses
directed them based on need. Some were still coming in being dragged by
security officers. Well, when is this going to end, when I ask?

Ame turned and strode out his quarters, his cloak flaring slightly behind him.
He had to keep moving, at least until he reached his destination he had to keep
moving before someone directly controlled by whatever it was that was out there
saw him and alerted the entity to his movements. The jammers were gone.. His
first line of defense against such attacks was gone, destroyed by those
controlled by the entity. He had to get to a safe location where he could if
not build a new one then set up local equipment to put out the jamming field.
Until then he had to trust what meager mental defenses he had to at least
momentarily protect him.

Again he sprinted down the corridor back to the lift and entered it. Wary of
being tracked he typed in his destination into the panel and waited for the
lift to begin moving. He had to keep moving.

As more people came in and out of sickbay, rumors started to flow about. "I
heard that the entire bridge crew became possessed and have set the ship on
immediate self-destruct!" Said one very terrified ensign.

"Now I doubt that very much Mr. Walker." Oridian said as he looked down on
Ensign Walker on the biobed. "Because if that were the case, why are we still
here?" He chuckled to himself at Walker's confused expression before moving on
to the next person. Next thing you know it's going to flying monkeys. He mused
to himself.

Ame pulled out a padd as the lift slowed, and used it to access the internal
sensors. It would be done to be caught so near his destination. As he looked
over the padd he noticed all the traffic seems to be near the front of the
area, leaving it perfectly easy to slip in the back and make it to safety. He
knew that any pursuers would never think to look for him here. After all the
first place would be his quarters then his office. Aside from the holodeck
there was no other places he frequented with any regularity. Ame exited the
lift and quickly strode the short distance to the door he needed and opened it
slipping into sickbay as quietly as he could.

The general noise and bustle kept Oridian from hearing any noise from the back
door, it seemed almost to him like the main door would never remain closed for
more then twenty seconds or so. He began to wander again, making his way slowly
to the back of sickbay, stopping and occasionally talking with different
crewmembers as he went along.

As he looked around Ame could see that sickbay was filling quickly with
wounded, perhaps he wasn't the only prey that the entity was seeking.. He would
have to begin fortifying an area quickly if he was to have any hope in
defending himself or any of these people from further attacks by the entity.
Ame smiled slightly as he came upon an empty biobed 2. Though he scowled
slightly as he noticed someone had added a name plate to it that had his name
listed. He didn't get hurt THAT often sheesh.. Pulling some tools out of his
cloak he started to modify the biobed's field generators that would create the
shielding needed should the patient prove to have an infectious disease. First
he had to protect himself.

A few tweaks and the shield could also generate the jammer frequencies.. As he
worked he wondered at the possibilities that could be made with his work. He
dare never let it or himself fall into enemy hands. It could prove disastrous
should an enemy gain the knowledge of how to manipulate the telepathic bands
thought technology. A goal that had been worked on by some races off and on for
decades if not centuries..

"Well Mr. Suisei, what are you doing down in Sickbay?" Oridian smiled to
himself as he spotted Ame over by his favorite bio-bed 2 and strode over.
"Shouldn't you be in engineering, you look or seem to be injured in any way."

Hearing the voice right behind him he started slightly, and hit a button on the
biobed's panel raising the shield around the biobed and himself. With his
safety assured he turned and looked over Oridian. He didn't seem to have that
look in his eye hat Sam and then Frankie had had. But better safe than sorry.
"And who's side are you on, ninja shrink?"

He glanced around, this wasn't good. He hadent had time to modify more than one
biobed or time to link their field generators so they could cover a wider area.
He had started too expand biobed 2's range but wasn't even sure if it was
expanded far enough for Oridian to be inside or outside the field.

Using the biobed's field, Ame what are you doing? Oridian pondered to himself
as he looked at Ame in the eyes. "I am on the side of this ship, and whose side
are you on?" He looked at Ame, his gaze unwavering.

Ame straightened and look straight into Oridian's eyes. "I am on the side of
the ship unless that means we are supporting whatever is controlling people and
making then do its bidding. I am on the side of freedom of thought and action.
So if your being controlled by whatever it is that's already attacked me twice
you can tell your master, I will fight and from me others will be raised to
fight it and its influence. It may have won the first skirmish but I'll be dead
before I see it win the war!" As he spoke, Ame felt a strong sense of
determination wash over him.. He could only hope it was his own.

The door opening again across the way made Oridian turn for a moment before
looking back at Ame. "Twice you say? Well, at least this thing isn't a one shot
kinda creature." He laughed to himself. "Relax Mr. Suisei, this place is safe."

As Oridian's words started to sink in, Ame sat on the biobed. He needed to
think, to plan. Field geometries and diagrams flashed through his mind as he
considered. At length he spoke. "I'm going to need equipment. No place is safe
until this threat is taken care of. I'll need hull access at some point, which
means I'll need to set up nullification fields that far and then through a hull
plate." He didn't even realize he was voicing his thoughts aloud, as he
described the path he was going to take.

Oridian watched on as Ame continued to rant on about his schemes and what he
was going to do. Poor man is paranoid beyond belief. "Ame, who attacked you?"

He flinched as he realized he had allowed himself to forget his surroundings
again, and turned to look at Oridian again.

He stared slowly. "Mr. Donnerjack was first. Whatever is doing it wore him like
a cheap suit. I had to use a site to site transport to get away cause we were
in my office and he was between me and the door. The second attack came on the
bridge. I was speaking with Commander Wilkinson when got the same look Sam had,
before he attacked me, in his eyes. I started to back up and was attacked from
behind I believe by Miss Christian. I'm not certain. I remember saying
something to try and throw off whatever was controlling their actions before
everything went black."

"When I woke up, the bridge was rather distracted. I heard someone mention
borg. I'm not certain. I used their distraction to get to the turbolift and
escape and after a quick stop to get basic supplies I cam here. I thought it
would be safest to hide here and make any necessary counter-strikes from here."
As he spoke his voice started to grow distant as he tried to keep back the
emotions that threatened to overwhelm him.

"Ame, relax. Your overreacting due to a situation that you had never
experienced before in which you feel a betrayal and need for revenge." He
sighed as he motioned around him. "Trust me, the situation does not call for
you to create a fortified bunker and base of operations, though it does sound
like a clever plan."

As Oridain spoke, he raised his eyebrow. "I wish this was the first time I felt
the sour pangs of betrayal. Oh deities of space I wish it was.. But I've tastes
that bitter fruit so many times when I was young that for a time I think I
lived more off it than the meager rations they gave. but I digress don't I? ..
If the situation of an unknown being being able to reach out and control anyone
on this ship doest call for a plan like this then what does?" as he spoke he
could feel the old pains rear up again from the recesses of his mind to mingle
with the new ones.

"The fact that your allowing yourself this paranoia and going to such great
lengths in you is another symbol of victory for the creature Ame, surely you
see that. True it hasn't taken over your mind, but it has consumed you by what
it has done with others." He sat down on the nearest biobed and sighed. "From
what I have seen and heard this creature enjoys pain and suffering, along with
paranoia. Thus is why he randomly controls our friends and colleagues only to
enjoy more our fear of it. No, I believe that we simply need to continue doing
our jobs as normal and deal with each situation accordingly." He added, more to
himself and those who might be listening then to Ame.

Ame closed his eyes as he started to push back the returned horrors of his
childhood and return them to the pits of his mind. His voice thick with emotion
he spoke. "I wish it was that simple. I really do. I can see your point but
then. I know things. Things that aren't safe. Things that mustn't be shared or
else it could mean disaster. Such knowledge must not be allowed to escape the
bottle father than it has already. Or else we give rise to an even worse threat
than even the borg..."

"And so then what do you plan to do? Hide on biobed 2 until the people cut the
power from sickbay?" Oridian's expression was sincere; poor Ame needed some
shore leave, and fast.

Ame smiled slightly at that. "They cant. Sickbay had dedicated power flows
directly from the warp core and in case those are unavailable a series of
fusion powered backups. Honestly, my plan had been to secure sickbay, first by
linking the biobed forcefields to create a safe zone within sickbay and then
expanding it using portable generators and the internal security fields. Then
after clearing the people in the area expanding once again, clearing those and
continuing until I either reached deflector control or a main shield generator
station then using it to clear the entire ship. Deflector control would have
been the best option as it would result in protection over the entire hull then
using the main shield grid to provide extra protection... I wasn't considering
being spooked the way you spooked me which had me act prematurely..." as the
words hang in the air he wonders if they made as much sense to Oridian as they
did him.

A nearby console was beeping and Oridian leaned over and tapped it, looking at
the information on the grid. His face paled for a moment and then he looked
back. "Well Mr. Suisei, it might interest you to know that the alien is gone
and decided to go play with his borg friends instead. There is a massive borg
invasion on the Alpha quadrant inbound for Earth as we speak." The news being
spoken sounded even worse then when he read it.

He blinked. "You. You mean it was real? I didn't imagine hearing that?" all the
color drained from his face as the implications sunk in. "we're finished. The
fleet's been in a cycle of rebuilding from the war. But there's no way enough
hulls have been lain. to even have a chance. We're going to need something new.
Deities this is bad..." he started to feel numb as he considered what bits he
knew of the fleet's defensive abilities and then planetary defenses from the
war. He looked straight at Oridian. "So you think it has bigger fish to fry
bout now? And I need to get back to work eh?" A wry note enters his voice at
the last. "I think I can include an upgrade that should stop similar instances
while gearing us back up to a level to fight the borg. Hrm have to ask the
captain..." He starts muttering softly to himself for a moment. Ame smiled
slightly and asked. "Do me a favor and not mention this to anyone?"

"I'd rather not have to dodge claims I've gone nutters, along with the claims
that what needs to be done hasn't been done and cant be.. though I might need
your help with testing an idea soon. "The smile faded as he stood and casually
ran his fingers over the disengage for the shield. "I'm taking quite the risk
but I hope you'll trust me."

"Would I really be a counselor if I did mention this to anyone?" Oridian just
laughed as Ame headed out of sickbay and towards engineering. "Well, its got
him out of here, but still so much more to do."
