"Watching and Waiting"
Dr. Rachelle Michaels & Ensign Ari LaRue

Ari had to hurry to make it to her shift on time down in sickbay. Now that
her hand had been repaired, not to mention her personal life, it was time to
get to work. There seemed to be an influx of either dead or injured Maritu.
There was still one that was unconscious, named Trebla. She had apparently
been
poisoned with something that had yet to be identified. Hopefully someone in
forensics will figure out which particular poison it was. Until then it would
be up to Ari and Dr. Michaels to handle the physical care of the patient.

Walking into sickbay Ari looked around and saw no sign of Dr. Michaels so
she first made a quick trip around sickbay checking on what patients were
there. She noted vital signs and if there was any improvement or not, marking
that
on their chart. She then made sure that all supplies were well stocked,
before the next influx arrived. What was it about this ship that caused people
to
go wacko and either attempt to kill each other in a holodeck program or kill
visitors on board?

Her next stop was at the bedside of the Maritu called Trebla. She was
unconscious from some kind of poison that had yet to be identified. Not only
was
the patient unconscious but was also paralyzed. That would lead to a plethora
of problems. Every body function would have to be artificially maintained for
her until the poison was identified or a cure was found. It was going to
prove to be an interesting shift in sickbay.

Rachelle finished her reading as quickly as she could. Nothing in the
database about whatever it was that was keeping the Maritu unconscious and
paralyzed. Oh, there were several near matches but there were enough
differences that
pinpointing it exactly was out of the question without more specific
information than they could uncover with the scans they had done. Sure, they
could
do more, but they could result in more serious consequences than the drug
itself presented. For example, dissection on the cellular level was an option,
but not while the patient lived.

She shut down the files she had been working on, a frustrated sigh working
its way between her lips. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, she stood
and crossed the room to reenter sickbay itself. After all, she had other
patients to monitor, ones she could and would heal. Just because this one
baffled
her was no reason to allow herself to become obsessed. For now, Trebla lived,
and the machines would assure that she would continue to do so until they
could solve this mystery. She hoped.

Ari was making rounds again later in the shift when she noticed something
strange going on with the monitors near Trebla. Checking them out Ari found
that Trebla's heart rate was elevated and some of her electrolytes were out of
balance. She rechecked the machines and checked the vitals with a tricorder
and found that the results were similar. Something was not right.

Taking the new information in hand, Ari walked over to see Dr. Michaels.
Hopefully the Chief of Medicine would be able to figure something out. After
all
that's what she was getting the big bucks for.

"Dr. Michaels, there seems to be a problem with the Maritu. Her heart rate
is elevated and her electrolytes are out of balance. I have double checked
everything and can't seem to find a reason for the discrepancy. Perhaps you
could take a look at her and see what you can figure out?"

Rachelle examined the readings on the screen. "This should do it. The flow
rate for the ethromitrite is too high for her species." Rachelle tapped the
controls and the readings steadied into what was normal for Maritu.

"We'll have to monitor a little more closely, as they adapt quickly to
whatever we administer to regulate her vitals. Nothing is ever easy, is it?"
