"Just Like Lightening"
Dr. Winona Swiftwind and MC Dane McKenna

It had taken him twenty minutes to make up his mind after his shower about
wither to wear his uniform or civvies. It took him ten minutes to do his hair
even though there was barely any there. It took twice that time put together to
get Dane to stop laughing at himself. He was primping, he never primped. The
only time he ever wore clothes that weren't marine issued or faded denim and
cotton was when he attended weddings and baptisms. But this girl, no this lady,
was far to good for old jeans and flannel shirts. As he saunter up to Winona's
door Dane made sure his wool sweater and Dockers were as sharp as his uniform
and then rang her chime.

Winona blinked then uncurled from the sofa and answered her door. "Oh," she
smiled at him. "I, er, didn't think you'd come." Glancing down at her grubby
sweats, she blushed furiously. "Come in?"

The woman even made sweats look elegant. Dane nodded while he swallowed the
lump in his throat. "Why wouldn't I have come?" He asked once inside her cabin.

"Let's just say you'll be the first to keep a date with me in over five years."
Winona shrugged.

Dane looked generally surprised. "No offense, Ma'am, but them were some awfully
dumb blokes. I mean no man in his right mind would stand a breathtakingly
beautiful sheila like yourself up."

"Um..." Winona blushed even deeper as she brushed at her disheveled hair with
one hand. "You need your eyes seeing to, Marine? Besides, it's mostly the
thought of who my papa is that scares 'em."

"The man's to be respected but not feared." Dane replied before smiling softly.
"And my eyes are just fine thanks."

Okay, she thought, that smile's making my knees weak. "Coffee? I have some
Hawaiian real stuff, if you like. Since my bother moved there, we have a ready
supply."

"Sounds great." Stepping a little further into the room Dane tried to look
around at the cabin but his eyes kept coming back to Winona. Admiring female
beauty had always been his favorite type of art aspersion, but he'd never seen
someone so stunning in such a natural way before.

He's looking at me again. Trying to maintain her dignity was hard when all she
wanted to do was giggle like a silly school girl. She set the coffee pot on
then offered him some of the cookies her mama had baked. "She's good. I'm not
great, but I can just about do a muffin."

Dane accepted the cookie with a boyish smile. "I love a good cookie. My
sister-in-law's baby sister hides when she sees me coming cause it's the first
thing I ask for, and my nieces and nephews all call me Uncle Cookie Monster."
His eyes lit up when he bit into the cookie. "Wow, nice."

"That's my mama's cooking for you," she grinned, weirdly proud that he was
impressed. "Can I make you dinner?"

He couldn't help when it happened, it just flashed though him at the oddest
times, the bitter sting of missing his mother. "Only if I can help." Dane
answered as he took another cookie.

"Sure, I'm not that great a cook actually. I can do three basic meals:
scrambled eggs, french toast, and beef stew. So, which would you like?" Still
smiling at him, she set the plate down on the coffee table and moved to stand a
little closer to him. She reached out to touch where he'd frowned but didn't
make any move to do anything other than brush her fingers over his face.

For a moment he wondered if she was touching the faded scare on his chin, but
then he realized she'd seen him frowning. "Stew sounds good. I haven't had any
since Mo's last attempt at making lamb stew." He smiled under her finger tips.

"That's better," she whispered. "Can I ask what you were frowning about?" He
smelled... wonderful. All clean and slightly spicy. She found herself stepping
just a little closer.

"Sure." Dane replied taking a moment before answering to think, and to enjoy
her closeness. "The look in your eyes when you spoke of your mum, made me miss
my own."

"I'm sorry for that," she said, moving closer once more. There was barely a
hair's breath between them and it didn't bother her. In fact, she liked it.
Damn, Noni, you're getting bulshy in your old age. "No one should have to miss
their mama. You can share mine, if you like. She has a thing for adopting poor
Marines on a whim. Drives papa mad." Gods but she wanted to kiss him so much.

Finally losing the struggle to keep his arms from encircling her, Dane allowed
himself to hold her firmly but making sure she knew she would pull away of she
didn't like it. "Bet your mama's beautiful and that your papa's heart flutters
when she's near, so driving him crazy's worth it."

Peering at him from beneath her eyelashes, Winona smiled then pressed herself
against him. "She's stunning. Even in her sixties, she's unbelievably
beautiful. I pale next to her..." the last came out as a mumble as she kissed
him so lightly it was like spring rain on his lips.

He wasn't sure but Dane thought his heart stopped, he knew his lungs had
stopped working. "Your stunning." He whispered.

"Thank you. Let you in one a secret?" she said, smiling even as she leaned
against him. "My knees have gone all wobbly."

In one swift and graceful motion Dane picked Winona up and held her in his
arms, her height, so close to his own, not making any difference. "Then we best
get you sitting down." He smiled, kissed her softly, and carried her over to
the kitchen area where he placed her as if she were a feather on the counter.

Her heart skipped several beats when he picked her up. Once sitting, she
wrapped her legs around his waist to draw him against her again. "Not quite the
meal I had in mind," she said before kissing him softly at first then deeper.

He'd watched his brothers all fall for their women and not one of them made it
seem like their Da had said. The old man had told them that the moment he'd
seen their mother it had felt as if he'd be hit by lighting. He kissed her
firmly, his hands weaving into her hair, his whole being felt electric. Like
lighting.

"You're amazing," she whispered with awe. Her dark eyes stared into his and she
melted totally for the first time in ten years. "This is such a bad idea," she
murmured as she kissed him again, deeper and stronger, losing herself in it.

He drank her in, her warmth, her scent. When their kiss finally ended he
caressed her face. "Ain't nothing amazing or special about me, Winona. I'm just
an over grown station owner's boy who made good in the marines." Her skin was
so warm and soft, he leaned in and kissed her cheek, it was sweet too. "Your to
good a woman for someone like me."

"Why d'you say that? My papa's a Marine, my lil sister was a Marine before
she..." she shook her head a little then laid it on his shoulder. "I haven't
looked at a man in ten years. Never crossed my mind to fall for someone 'cept
you. Give me one really good reason why you're not good enough."

Dane opened his mouth to give her a reason but couldn't think of one that
didn't want to make him smack himself.

"See? Can't think of any, can you?" she teased as she placed a kiss on his neck.

"Not much for thinking anyway." Dane smirked as he leaned in and kissed her
again.

"Handsome man," she breathed over his lips. "Have a cute accent too. Stay the
night?" It was forward and thorough unladylike, but who cared? She wanted him
to, needed him to.

It took him by surprise but Dane nodded. "I'll stay as long as you want me to,
darlin', but I want to court you the proper way before we do more then just
sleep with you in my arms."

"Court me?" she laughed deep and resonating. "I've never been courted before.
How d'you go about it? We even allowed to kiss without supervision? Maybe we
should get Butch back in here to keep an eye on us." Touching her nose to his,
she couldn't stop giggling.

"We can do everything, but I want it to mean something when I take you to what
will be out bed." Dane said honestly. "I want to make sure you want this, me,
that you know all I'll ever try my best to do is make you happy."

"Y'know what? You've gotta be the cutest, sweetest man ever," she sighed
happily. "Silly as anything, but lovely too." Once again, she touched her nose
to his then kissed him softly.

Dane smiled his boyish smile and held her close to him. "I can live with cute,
sweet, and silly if it's for you."

"You still want dinner?" she asked shyly, suddenly blushing. "I'd offer you
somethin' else but.... but I suddenly don't want to sound like some desperate
old maid anymore."

Again he caressed her face. "Your no desperate old maid, Winona. I just took to
long finding you is all. Shoulda let that dog lose ages ago."

Closing her eyes at his attentions, she smiled for him. "Poor pup, I feel sorry
for her y'know."

"And why's that?" He asked as his touch trailed down so his finger tips were
kissing the flesh of her neck as lightly as gossamer feathers.

Her breath caught in her throat and she pushed herself flush against him,
needing to feel more of him touching her. "Calling such a sweet lil thing
Butch..."

"General Butch actually." Dane laughed. "She was a gift from my youngest niece
and my brothers teased me over being a marine with such a 'butch' dog."

"General? Papa's gonna be so pleased to share a rank with a fluffy dog," she
grinned, even as she sat back a little so as not to rush him or force him into
something.

Dane nodded at the question and used the extra space between them to run his
hands down her arms until they rested on her thighs. "Wouldn't want to name a
marine's dog Admiral." He bit back a sigh as he outlined her body with his
eyes. "Beautiful."

"Your dog? Or me?" she said, her eyes smoldering. The way he touched her was
like pure bliss and she never wanted it to end.

"You." He replied with reverence, his eyes looking up to meet hers.

"God but I want to ask you to make love to me." Blushing again, she looked away
and shrugged. "Ignore me. Never felt like this before is all."

Dane put a finger gently under her chin and turned her head back so that they
were looking at each other. "I don't want to rush you, darlin'."

"Dane," she sighed. "I asked you. I don't make that a habit, y'know. First in
ten years. The last one I was about t'marry before... before he left me. I
don't throw myself at any man." Brushing his cheeks with soft fingers, she
admitted, "I'm falling for you. Like deep and hard."

"I'd tell you that I'd catch you, but I'm falling too." Dane replied. The man
who left her was a bloody fool and he'd deck him the moment he'd lay eyes on
him.

"Then kiss me? Hold me tight and we'll work out where to stop when we get
there..." She smiled at him shyly, suddenly looking twenty years younger.

Dane picked her up in his arms again and carried her back into her lounge. He
sat on the sofa, holding her on his lap, and gently kissed her as he held her
tightly. A thousand things ran through his mind and every single one was of
her.

Curling up a little in his arms, she sighed against his lips. It felt so right,
so perfect. "This for keeps?" she asked tentatively after a long moment. "I'd
like to be able to keep you."

"I was yours the moment you stepped into my office." Dane admitted. "Just like
Da said, like lightening."
