Another beautiful day for my 3rd Raptor Run with Dale and Elva Paulson last Sat. Despite the fog in the morning and the almost windless afternoon, there was still lots of good highlites to be had. The taking of a small rodent less than 20 feet from our car by a Red-tail hawk along North Bank Rd was definitely one of them. The RTHA appeared to land hard, took a quick look at us as we drove by slowly, then flew off with its lunch securely in its talons. The brilliant blue hues of the Western bluebirds are always a welcome sight for me because we see far too few over on the coast. Of course the immature Golden eagle that soared over our group giving us all great looks is another bird I don't often see on the coast. While I have had great looks at their white underwing patches in the past, this was the first time I have had good views of their white tail patch. Nest building by a beautiful adult Bald eagle is something I have had the opportunity to witness on the coast but they are such awesome and majestic birds to watch as they talk to each and go through their courtship rituals. One last treat that not everyone on the Raptor Run got to experience but maybe many of you have already seen....a big Thank you to Mark Hamm for taking me, Beth, Bill and Nancy out to see the Burrowing owl at the end of our day near Kruse Farms. Such a petite little raptor compared to the very large Bald eagles we had been seeing. It was very calm and cooperative as we observed, admired and photographed it. Thanks again to Dale and Elva, Mark and to Matt Hunter for always answering the difficult questions !!! Rick Foster Myrtle Point
