Hi Folks, I recently mentioned that one can discern many adult from immature birds in flight (such as crows, ravens, vultures, etc.). Yesterday, while working in Laurelwood (just east of Roseburg High School), I was reminded that the same is true for Vaux's Swifts. This time of year there are family groups flying around, and many of the adults have "imperfect" shapes in their wings because of the molting flight feathers, while the young of the year have perfectly shaped wings. They whirl around pretty fast, but with a little effort/practice, you can see the difference in the wings. Another wanderer, female Black-throated Gray Warbler, in one of our plum trees this morning.
