It is correct under ueb; however, personally, I would use the th and
en contractions.
One good rule of thumb in ueb is to go with the emphasis. Southend is
one word, even though it is made up of south and end. So you can use
the t h e sign. but as I say, for stylistic reasons I prefer to use
the t h and e n signs.
