Here it is.

10.11 Bridging
Compound words
10.11.1 Do not use a groupsign which would bridge the words which make up an unhyphenated compound word.

What is the actual rule stipulating the use of th and en over the n?

Hi Judith and Matt,

The correct contracting of Southend is as you would expect:

S OU TH EN d

Please see RUEB 10.11.1 (Southend is even listed as an example!) :)

Hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

It is correct under ueb; however, personally, I would use the th and
en contractions.
One good rule of thumb in ueb is to go with the emphasis.  Southend is
one word, even though it is made up of south and end. So you can use
the t h e sign. but as I say, for stylistic reasons I prefer to use
the t h and e n signs.

Hi,

I am proofreading a book in which Southend has been contracted using
the “the” sign. It looks horrible but is it correct?

I don’t feel safe using my instincts in UEB.

Kind regards,
Judith
