[tssg-tech] Re: Parsing BostonEventsList with ROME

Julie,

Aside from our inability to search the Description data ---

The URL (Link) that is returned by my ROME / JDOM application can be used
directly to activate a browser view of all of the "details". Give it a try.

We could use the Title as the visual presentation for the Link. In fact, this
is exactly what is done on the BEL rss web page.

I admit that this doesn't solve the "searching" functionality problem. I don't
have a better suggestion for searching the details in the Description other
than
brute force.

YOU SAID --

Can we load each <description> into an HTML template (since it doesn't have
head or body tags) and then into the DOM without displaying it? Then use
javascript to get what we need. I think we can do this with the web view.

I SAY --

I don't know how to solve this problem, and I don't know if your suggestion
will
work. JDOM is used by ROME, and is only used in my application in one method
call. I have worked with the ROME source code, and it enables you to traverse
the various tag levels (parents and children). I don't think that ROME is very
complicated, but it also isn't really flexible. I suppose that we could make a
custom ROME api using the OPEN source code. ROME and JDOM are just two .JAR
files that can be modified for our own use.

I SAY --

"namespaces" are really a C++ or C# phenomenon. In Java, we talk about
"packages". Also, JavaScript is really a client-side (browser) language. I'm
not sure if we can use JavaScript in this case.

Best Regards,
Harry Henriques
Java Developer

Subject: [tssg-tech] Re: Parsing BostonEventsList with ROME

Harry, we could do - Android provides a 'web' view that we could just load the
entire <description> tag into. But this leaves us with a few problems, in terms
of requirements:

        * filter/search list by event type
        * filter/search by date or range of dates
        * filter by location (search not mentioned)

        * push items onto calendar
        * go directly to the event's web site (not the BEL entry)So for these
we'd
still have to get event type(s), event date and time, location, and URL of the
event's site out of that description.

Can we load each <description> into an HTML template (since it doesn't have
head
or body tags) and then into the DOM without displaying it? Then use javascript
to get what we need. I think we can do this with the web view.

It does seem like a lot of work, but since BEL hadn't implemented their own
namespace to extend the XML, they had to put it all into description - and
that's what we have to work with now. Jim D. did say we could ask for some
enhancements to the site, but I think a namespace/XML extension would be too
much.

Other options?
