Armando,
This is a hard nut to crack.
Subject: [triadtechtalk] Quick Launch: Extra one loads at boot up
Armando,
Yes, I do have Cop loaded up. I did it when you suggested it a long time ago.
I think you said something like install it and forget about but if you ever need it it is there.
Talk about easy to run. I just stated DOS from windows and typed COP. And there it was>selected restore and enter.
However, what ever is causing the problem evidently was not a registry issue since after I exited COP I restarted my computer and looked at the Task bar. The culprit is still at work. I still have the 2 quick launches (The normal one at the far left and the other one is actually labeled Quick Launch). They both contain the same items: IE, Netscape 7.1, Netscape Mail, and Fierfox.
I was thinking maybe it is something loaded in to the registry and not a corruption. So I checked to see what I could find in the registry called Quick Launch.
These are he 2 entries I found. Hopefully they may have something to do with the problem:
1. HKU-software>Idea2>Sidebar>1.0>Toolbarsr> and under name : C:Windows\Application Data\Mircosoft\Internet Explorter\Quick Launch
2. HKU-software>Microsoft>Windows>current version>Grp Conv>Map Groups>Quick Launch> and under data: C:Windows\Application Data\Mircosoft\Internet Explorter\Quick Launch
I remember how to get into the registry and look around since Check had me delete something there way back to correct another problem. But he showed me exactly where to go and exactly what to do.
So thanks Armando & Degilbo; and hopefully this info may help find the solution.

Brian can not lock or unlock any taskbars in Windows 98, something he should've mentioned he's using as his OS, unless he's using XP and I missed that.
http://www.bootdisk.com/cop.htm If Brian loaded COP, then all he has to do is restore his previously working registry saved by COP. If he didn't load COP and this behaviour by Windows began but within the past 4 days, then he can boot into DOS by Starting the PC and repeatedly tapping on the F8 key to obtain the BOOT OPTIONS dialogue, choose DOS command only. Type "scanreg /restore" sans quotes at the c:\Windows> prompt and press RETURN or ENTER.
Now choose the registry which you think may not have this double quick launch glitch and reboot.
Windows 98 will only save 4 instances of the registry, one per date, and only once per day, even if the PC is booted numerous times on any date. If this behavior began more than 4 days ago, then restoring an older registry will not work at resolving the doubled quick launch setting. Windows already dumped the oldest registry for the newer ones. It will only save 4 and the current one that it has now loaded.

Strange behaviour, Brian, but try clicking LOCK TASKBAR to see if that remedies the problem.

Degilbo,
You mentioned the Taskbar tweeking in helping Sylvia with a problem.
I have just have a strange thing happen related to the task bar that I can't seem to remedy and hope you may know how to fix it.
When I start my computer it loads up an additional quick launch and an extra space on the task bar. To remove both of them I right click on the task bar>select Tools>uncheck the lower quick launch and uncheck remove the check mark next to it. They are removed, but they then show up automatically when I reboot.
I hope there is a fix as easy as there was for Sylvia.
Thanks

Degilbo,
...clicking LOCK TASKBAR to see if that remedies the problem...
I tried but could not find that option. I am using Win98SE in case that matters.
I did find a New Tool bar option with a right click on the task bar>tools. But was reluctant to click on to see where it would take me in case it would add another Quick launch; and since I do not know how to delete the extra one I now have I could end up with 3 of them instead of 1!!
If you could let me know how to access the Lock taskbar option in Win98 and I will give it a try.
THANKS,
BRIAN

Hmmm, that's strange. Anything and everything in 98 is in the registry, as well as in any Windows OS. But the instances that you describe in your registry search are not the Quick Launch that you desire to excise.
Anyway, you say you have 2 Quick Launch toolbars in your Taskbar and you want to excise one of them.
Do this: With your mouse go to the Quick Launch toolbar in your Taskbar, the one you wish to delete, and when the mouse's pointer becomes a double horizontal arrows scheme, click and drag it to the Desktop and release it. Release it anywhere on the desktop.
There should now be a n "X" on the right top corner of that box of the Quick Launch Toolbar that you just moved to the desktop. Click it shut and that should get rid of it for good. You'll get a dialog box saying "You have chosen to close...", just tell it yes! If you want it back, just add another quick launch toolbar to your task bar.
BTW, did you by any chance install TweakUI and added this new QL toolbar inadvertently? If so, that's the best way to get rid of it, through TweakUI's interface.
Now, to reinstall my Quick Launch Toolbar in my Taskbar, sheesh! (LOL) ;)
