We've had a few interesting birds passing through the yard lately (west Knox Co., TN) but overall not up to expectations. Still have 3 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds fighting over the feeder as of this morning. A female Belted Kingfisher made a direct flyoever this morning as well. A pretty rare bird for the yard and actually the first visual confirmation. I've heard them calling from a distance a few times. Lots of Eastern Wood-Pewees, sometimes 3-4 visible at once. The occassional Empid slips in as well. Had what I'm calling an Acadian on Sunday and a quiet "Trail's" last week. The Black Gum trees had a bad year and have produced almost no berries. We've heard LOTS of thrushes flying over at night but almost none seen during the daytime. A couple of Swainson's this weekend has been it. Vireo's also normally flock to the Black Gum berries this time of year. Past years I've had all 6 common species but this year nothing other than a couple of Red-eyeds earlier this fall. A handful of tanagers have shown up, Summer Tanagers earlier this fall and a few Scarlet Tanagers the past week. A young male Rose-breasted Grosbeak spent most of yesterday at the feeder. The first Yellow-bellied Sapsucker showed up in time for the Knox Co. Fall Count on Sunday and was seen again yesterday. A fair number of warblers have been seen with American Redstart and Magnolia currently the most common. I had about 6 Redstarts yesterday morning including 2 adult males. The first Palm showed up middle of last week in a vacant lot up the street as we walked the dogs. A Nashville was the highlight of my yardlist for the Knox Co. Fall Count on Sunday; 6 species of warblers here that day. Finally got my first Bay-breasted of the fall this morning. Other species seen recently include Tennessee, Blackburnian, and Black- throated Green.
