These are really cool birds and, if hunted in TN, more likely to go the way of Quail, then geese. The population which comes through TN is less than 50,000, less than than 20,000 if you discount last winter's count which for some reason was twice the previous 5 year average. The 600,000 is worldwide and most Cranes in US are in the West. Additionally, geese raise large numbers of young each year, while Cranes raise 1, and only occasionally 2, young each year. It takes 6-7 years for a Crane to reach reproductive maturity. So, there is little likelihood the population is going to explode like the geese population. Hunting Cranes in TN is a bad idea.
