"By all accounts, these are some really cool birds -- and it would be a shame
to see them end up in the same overpopulation situation as snow geese and
resident Canada geese."
These are really cool birds and, if hunted in TN, more likely to go the way of
Quail, then geese. The population which comes through TN is less than 50,000,
less than than 20,000 if you discount last winter's count which for some reason
was twice the previous 5 year average. The 600,000 is worldwide and most Cranes
in US are in the West. Additionally, geese raise large numbers of young each
year, while Cranes raise 1, and only occasionally 2, young each year. It takes
6-7 years for a Crane to reach reproductive maturity. So, there is little
likelihood the population is going to explode like the geese population.
Hunting Cranes in TN is a bad idea. Visit
tennessee.gov/twra/sandhillproposal.htmll and let them know you oppose it.
