On Wednesday night, Mike Nelson and I visited Forks of the River WMA in east Knox County (near Ijams Nature Center) to look for AMERICAN WOODCOCKs and owls. We heard no screech owls, a bird that is often found there. I'm curious about when these birds begin their calling and display flights, how long they continue, and when they end. Hopefully I will get out to this area a few more times this spring and record this information. If anyone else across the state knows of places to see/hear woodcocks, it might be interesting to compare notes. I didn't take temperature records, but will try to in the future. Sunset was 6:27 p.m. We heard the first bird call about 6:40, 13 minutes after official sunset. The last calls were given about 7:04, so the birds called for around 24 minutes. We were able to get within about 10 feet of one bird 'peenting' on the ground. This one started calling around 6:46 and was the last one we heard. It did about 7 display flights during that 18 minutes. It was one very patient bird! It gave a lot more peent calls on the ground than I'm used to, before finally taking off for its display flight. During our time there, we saw at least 3 birds, and heard 3 others. A bonus was seeing a GREAT HORNED OWL fly into a tree nearby and sit for a while. It never called.
