Sam Harboldt
Jackson, Tennessee
Madison County.
I'm an everyday-reader and virtually- never-contributor to TN bird listings, so
not even sure I can pull this off. To me it's the astounding location and the
oblivious attitude of the birds that is so remarkable. The birds have been
beside a half-thawed puddle in a tiny triangle of short-mown road-side Bermuda
grass beside the Ceramic Tile Warehouse that is distantly visible from the
flashing yellow light on 412 about 2 miles NW of I40 (main road from Jackson to
Dyersburg). Sunday I saw 12 birds but this Monday morning on the way to work
I picked out only 2. One can drive to within 30 feet of the birds, who show no
alarm at the close approach of a car. The triangle is bounded by the parking
lot of the Warehouse, by Bells Road, and by the dead end Bells Road Spur that
runs by the back doors of the Warehouse. The mini-marsh habitat there is
thanks to a drain that runs under Bells Road into the grassy area and exits the
grassy area to drain through a culvert under the Bells Road Spur. Slightly
taller darker weedy vegetation marks the puddle per se, which portion of this
tiny triangle could only occasionally be dry enough to mow.
