And this is just a few of the known fairly recent incidents. We'll never know how many go unreported or undiscovered. Another thing to think about is that not only Whooping Cranes will fall under this "mistaken identity" umbrella or simple outright shootings because the birds were simply "just there". There are also other peripheral casualties. Living in the Mississippi Flyway for three years, I've heard of multiple reports of hunters shooting Trumpeter Swans while Snow Goose hunting. These are only a few unethical hunters that either don't take the time to learn the difference between their quarry and other "similar" species and/or those hunters that simply don't care about what they're shooting at and/or the repercussions of their actions. Either way, mistaken identity or outright belligerence, similar species are at risk of being shot or shot at. In SE Misouri, NW Tennessee and SW Kentucky (that I know of), people call Great Blue Herons, and Egrets, cranes. I would think that similar species to Sandhill Cranes (to the general public) might include: Whooping Cranes, Swans, herons and egrets, marsh birds like Bitterns. Of course to many of us bird watchers, the differences of these species are quite apparent and even blatant. I suppose that with hunting of any sort, some risk of mistaken identity is involved. I've heard (very few) stories of deer hunters mistakenly shooting a farmers donkey or calf.
