Thank you, David. There are actually more shooting deaths than I realized. I must add: the female Whooper shot in 2009 was a loss of special signficance to the population. She was the female of the "First Family" and the only eastern Whooping crane at that time to have hatched a chick that fledged and migrated with its parents. There are also fewer females in the population than males. Vickie Henderson Knoxville, TN In a message dated 1/24/2011 8:05:27 A.M. He buried it, but turned himself in later. He was fined $15,000 1991-Whooping Crane shot and killed in Texas for no reason by a fisherman who saw some big white birds flying around. He went back to his truck, got his gun, and shot one. He, too, buried it, but it was discovered by a game warden after talking with the man's nephew who told him about the big bird his uncle shot. I could not find any information on the man's punishment. 2000-2 non-migratory Whooping Cranes were shot and killed by an 18-year old in Florida. He was driving along and saw 2 big white birds in a field. He stopped, shot them, and drove off. After the carcasses were discovered, bird watchers who had seen the birds in the field shortly before the shooting provided a description of a vehicle nearby. The man was arrested and sentenced to 75 days in jail, 200 hours of community service, 2 years probation, and had his driver's license revoked. 2004-3 Whooping Cranes were shot by Sandhill Crane hunters in Kansas. All three birds were wounded; two were found but later died despite treatment, and the third was never found. The hunters were fined, but I could not find out how much. The hunters said they thought the birds were Sandhill Cranes. Kansas requires hunters to take an online identification quiz before permits are issued. 2009-An Operation Migration Whooping Crane was shot and killed in Indiana. The person responsible has never been found 2010-3 Whooping Cranes shot and killed near Albany , GA. The person responsible has not been found David Aborn Chattanooga, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
