I spent Wednesday with Than Boves at North Cumberland WMA chasing around
Cerulean Warblers. While we were watching a male Cerulean, I heard a funny
sounding vireo. It was most similar to a Red-eyed, but had more space between
phrases and was higher pitched, but not as high or sharp as a Blue-headed
Vireo. We agreed that the song was in between, which had me think maybe it was
a Philadelphia Vireo (which I haven't seen or heard in several years).

I really wanted to see this bird and get an ID. After a few minutes of
watching the bird move around in the canopy 100 ft up and seeing only vireo
undertail, we got good looks at the culprit, which was a Yellow-throated Vireo!
We watched the bird sing this other song that I would never have associated
with a Yellow-throated Vireo. Over 5 minutes or so, the bird never sang the
typical slow, raspy "three-eight" song, not even one phrase of it. I don't
know if Yellow-throated Vireos do this often or not, but it certainly had us
confused!

Good birding,
Scott Somershoe
