Sightings Report 22 & 28 Feb2007 Ensley Bottoms area, Memphis, Shelby County Location: TN 2 Mem,TVA PONDS Observation date: 2/22/07, 4:05-5:05pm Notes: The large Tva pond had 78 L.Scaup and the small one had 63. A good flock of ducks lifted off the near side of Mckellar Lk circled once and went westward, approx 150 in flight. DC Cormorants were down-in McKellar Lk and departing in various numbers and massing up over the far end of the TVA plant before heading SW. Additional Large flocks of DC Cormorants were flying in from up river from the far side of Presidents Island. Roughly 24 flocks/skeins went by for a count and numerous straggler birds. 3 of the stragglers circled low over the ponds to allow a good close up look before they caught on with a larger group. Interesting day watching these birds move from their day feeding areas onward to the night time roosts. Number of species: 13 Canada Goose 2 Lesser Scaup 391 Double-crested Cormorant 935 Great Blue Heron 1 Red-tailed Hawk 1 American Coot 23 Ring-billed Gull 4 Rock Pigeon 21 Mourning Dove 2 American Robin 17 Northern Mockingbird 1 European Starling 7 Red-winged Blackbird 35 Location: TN 2 Mem, Riverport Rd Ponds / Swamp Observation date: 2/22/07,5:05-5:25pm Notes: A run down the road produced several species as the sun was setting. All Ponds and Sloughs are at full water level for the first time in many months. Number of species: 11 Canada Goose 30 Wood Duck 2 Gadwall 42 Mallard 3 Hooded Merganser 4 Mourning Dove 12 Belted Kingfisher 1 Eastern Phoebe 2 Northern Mockingbird 1 Red-winged Blackbird 10 Common Grackle 18 Location: TN 2 Mem,TVA PONDS Observation date: 2/28/07,3:50-5:25pm Notes: DC Cormorants once again on the move in late afternoon. Most of the birds coming in from up river in big broken up V patterns, picking up stragglers along the way. Once again headed S-SW. Duck numbers still going down on the TVA ponds, some lift offs from Mckellar Lake behind the ponds, Dredging still going on. Watched a Am Kestral dining on the remains of what may have been the wing and leg sections of a Killdeer. It sat ontop of a fencepost for a good 20 minutes pulling feathers and dining. Number of species: 12 Canada Goose 2 Mallard 7 Lesser Scaup 227 Pied-billed Grebe 3 Double-crested Cormorant 784 Great Blue Heron 5 Red-shouldered Hawk 1 Red-tailed Hawk 1 American Kestrel 1 American Coot 14 Northern Mockingbird 1 Red-winged Blackbird 32 Location: TN 2 Mem, Riverport Rd Ponds / Swamp Observation date: 2/28/07,5:25-5:35pm Notes: Quick looks on the drive out, no chance to scan/count the ponds and sloughs.
