Sightings Report 12 April 07, (Upland Sandpipers found) Ensley Bottoms
Memphis Shelby County
Location: TN 2 Mem, TE Maxwell Lagoons

Observation date: 4/12/07,1245-130pm

Notes: Today was the forth day of visiting the fields at the earth
complex. Upland Sandpipers were reported by Jeff Wilson and Virginia
Reynolds on Sat & Sun. Had no luck as did the other intrepid folks who came
out m-w. Scanned the field for about 10 minutes and was just about to leave
after seeing nothing at all, when a head popped up almost at the high grass
line 100 yds away halfway down the field from the car. At first I thought it
was a Modo, but I continued to watch as it worked its way towards the SW of
the field. Then the second one appeared in the open. Ah a Upland Sandpiper.
After ten minutes of scanning and scoping 2 more showed themselves. Four in
all. They stayed in a line working/feeding there way parallel to the rd I
was on. I crept the car up every so often to stay up with them. Long
distance camera shots through the scope were useless, to much light. But
when they got to about 45 feet away I used my 4X teleconverter on them. Was
able to get 4 or 5 good ID pictures. I was looking forward to even closer
shots until the city workers had to drag a massive crane along through the
rd we were on and the birds, well were disturbed into immediate flight, and
my vehicle and I had to relocate. Could not find them again. Enjoyed 45
minutes of them walking towards me. Four days of looking finally paid off.
