March 18, 2016Fulton County, KY (about 1 mile north of Lake County, TN)
The Ruff I found yesterday at the jct. of Hwy 94 and Midway Church Road in
Fulton County, KY was still present this afternoon in same general area but
further away from Midway Church Rd. today (nearer to the white house north of
Midway Church Rd). Some others looked for it this morning but did not find it.
It took me a long time to find the bird today. I think it was because the bird
was sleeping and was pretty far away. Once it started preening the white neck
was evident. I never saw the bird feed today. It preened for a long time then
went to sleep. Many times when shorebirds do this they are getting ready to
leave and continue their migration journey.
It was in the pool closest to the white house that's north of Midway Church
Road. When I first noticed it, it was sitting with a Greater Yellowlegs
preening. After a few minutes of preening the two birds went to sleep. I picked
up my phone to get a message out that the bird was still present and when I
looked back in my scope the bird was gone. I looked for it for a few minutes
but did not refind it and time did not permit me to search for it any longer.
There were lots of birds moving around and the ducks were nervous as there were
3 Bald Eagles in the area. The Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral
Sandpipers, and Bonaparte's Gulls were also moving around a lot as well so its
possible the bird may still be around. There's also water on the east side of
Hwy 94 with birds in it and I did not have time to search there.
Good birding,
