This afternoon I had a Ruff, of the white-necked variant type, today in Fulton
County, KY (about 1 mile north of Lake County, TN). It was at the jct. of Hwy.
94 & Midway Church Rd. on the west side of the highway in a flooded field with
a large flock of yellowlegs. I was able to get a few distant digiscoped pics.
The bird was about the same bulk as. Greater Yellowlegs, seen in direct
comparison. The bird was overall brown, not gray like a yellowlegs. It was
about the same color as a Pectoral Sandpiper. The legs were bright orange, not
yellow. The neck was mostly white. The head was brownish with quite a few white
feathers on it, especially near the base of the bill. Bill was orange at the
base and dark on the distal end. When seen in flight the bird showed a "V"
shaped white rump patch.
The entire flock flushed a few times and then would settle back into the
flooded field and resume feeding. There are over 200 yellowlegs (mixture of
Greater & Lesser) in the area with a few Pecs. Lots of ducks around too. Maybe
it will hang around a few days.
I had an "Ol' Coot moment" - I told Mike Todd yesterday that I was looking for
a Ruff and boom! Today, there it was!
Good birding!
