Hohenwald, Lewis Co. TN
I arrived today at 12:30 and found the bird resting in the Wisteria Vine at
12:30:30. The fastest TN lifer in years. I was sweating this year, as each
year the possibilities get tighter and before long my 30 year string of
getting
at least one new state bird will have to stop. I stayed for about an hour and
had good views of the bird on 5 occasions as it fed under the feeder and
rested in the Wisteria, a budding Maple Tree in the yard next door and among
the
Sweet Gum balls in the tree in back of the carport. The two poor photos that
I took of this latest edition to my TN List will be treasured
...............
While I was there, Mrs. Russell returned with a feeder holder which we
placed in her front yard so she can sit inside and watch her charges. Many
thanks
to Bill for getting the word out and his gracious mother for allowing us to
share in this great find.
On the way down, about 4 miles south of I-40, I had an adult Bald Eagle
soaring over the road, good omen.
I went by Pickwick Dam afterward and found no water being let out and only 2
gulls below the dam. Above the dam, Herring Gulls out numbered the
Ring-bills. Lots of Coots and a few scaup were out numbered by the Horned
Grebes (28)
and Pied-billed (94), of these 54 Pied were all in and around the boats at the
Marina.
In Savannah Bottoms in Hardin Co. and Clear Creek bottoms in Hardeman Co, I
found my 11th and 12th occupied Great-Horned nest for the season. I have 4 in
Tunica Co, MS,- 1 in DeSoto Co, MS,- 2 in Shelby Co, TN-2 in Lauderdale Co,
and 1 in Dyer Co. Watch those Skunk numbers go down........
Good Birding !!!
