Wheeler and Wilson Reservoirs
Lawrence and Colber Counties
I led a small group of birders with the TOS winter meeting on a field trip
along Wheeler and Wilson Reservoir's south shoreline. We made stops at Fox
Creek WMA, Mallard Creek Rec Area, Spring Creek embayment, Wheeler Dam, Town
Creek Marsh, The Point and Wilson Dam. We did get to enjoy lots of
Red-breasted Mergansers at Fox Creek, 50+ Common Loons at Mallard Creek, an
immature eagle at Spring Creek and 2 American White Pelicans at The Point. The
major highlights of the trip, however, came at the last stop, Wilson Dam. From
the Visitor's Center Overlook, we enjoyed 52 American White Pelicans and got to
watch the Peregrine Falcon put on an extended aerial display (no kills, but he
definitely scared the gulls!). We also found 4 adult Black-crowned
Night-Herons, a rare winter treat at this location. Our final bird at the site
was a cooperative second winter Lesser Black-backed Gull. We also found a
Thayer's type gull, with typical chocolate brown primaries with white tips,
dark outer webs and pale inner, but the head was big and flat and bill seemed
more the size of a Herring Gull. This one had to go down as gull sp.
