4/28/09
Dyer & Lake Co.
I got off of work and headed to see if the unsettled weather might have
grounded something good along the Mississippi. Didn't have anything unusual at
all, but several new year birds. Only shorebirds of note were 97 resting
Long-billed Dowitchers in Lake Co, in the same flooded field that I had 27
Long-billed Dowitchers on 4/24/09.

Other highlights were my 1st Grasshopper Sparrows, and 15+ Lincoln's Sparrows
working a big field in Dyer Co. Warblers weren't extremely numerous, but some
nice FOS birds were highlights: Golden-winged (1), Magnolia (1), Bay-breasted
(1), Blackpoll (1), Northern Waterthrush (1), all seen for a change. All of
these were seen along the entrance road to Moss Island (Dyer Co).

My 1st Bank Swallows (2), were also working southern Dyer Co. Bobolinks are in
nicely now, working the vetch that is in bloom along the levees. I had 48 in
two groups in southern Lake Co, as usual in the early stages of their
migration, all males. Dickcissels were everywhere, as expected.

I tried unsuccessfully for the White-faced Ibis that was seen for a couple of
days at Long Point at Reelfoot.

I birded the morning with a visiting birder from CO who needed Swainson's
Warbler to just about clean up the eastern warblers for her. We had great looks
at two of these, and had a nice run on warblers for the morning, with 26
species counting Chat, seeing all but 4 of them. Warblers were as follows:

Tennessee (8)
Nashville (2)
Northern Parula (20)
Yellow (1)
Chestnut-sided (3)
Magnolia (1)
Cape May (3)
Yellow-rumped (3)
Black-throated Green (2)
Blackburnian (1)
Yellow-throated (5)
Pine (6)
Prairie (20)
Palm (10)
Bay-breasted (1)
Blackpoll (2)
Black-and-white (5)
Prothonotary (4)
Worm-eating (1)
Swainson's (3)
Northern Waterthrush (1)
LA Waterthrush (3)
KY Warbler (8)
Common Yellowthroat (6)
Hooded Warbler (6)
Yellow-breasted Chat (12)

We also had numerous Rose-breasted Grosbeaks as well as both Tanagers. The 1st
local Dickcissels are in, with a couple seen. A couple of Yellow-billed Cuckoos
were also heard.

Birded the same area again today for a couple of hours. I had my 1st Ovenbird
and Veery of the year, and singing Gray-cheeked made a sweep of the late-season
thrushes. With the Ovenbird and Golden-winged Warbler from the 28th, that made
28 species of warblers the last 3 days, and Orange-crowned and American
Redstart made 30 species of warbler for the last week.

I am still missing a few birds that I should have had by now, but migration is
definitely picking up in the woods. I have posted some more shots from the last
few days, starting here: http://www.pbase.com/mctodd/image/111936464 . Among
these are some nice Grasshopper Sparrow shots, Bay-breasted, Golden-winged, and
Cape May Warblers, a very wet Barred Owl, Bobolinks, Veery and a few other odds
and ends.

Good Birding!!
