During a group canoe/kayak tour yesterday evening, five COMMON TERNS were seen
perched on a floating log in Douglas Lake near the Rankin coal tipple.
Also, we watched a pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES feeding nestlings in what had been
identified as a yellow warbler nest in the "IMBD at Rankin" post of 5/10/04.
The EASTERN KINGBIRD nest in the same bush was inundated by the rising lake,
which has now reached summer pool level (994').
We saw 6 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS, and heard several more. They're likely
enjoying the cicada explosion. BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS have established a
rookery in a willow thicket across from the tipple. GREAT EGRETS (about 20)
are roosting in a secluded cove out of sight from the shore.
