Rankin Bottoms (Cocke county) & Leadvale (Jefferson county), Douglas
Lake. 9/12/09, 4:30-7:00 PM
Lake elevation: 983.9 ft.

I met up with a Greene county TOS group, led by Don Miller, who were
scoping in vain for shorebirds on the mudflats at Rankin Bottoms. Don
& I went out in a canoe to see what we could find , and he soon
spotted a peregrine falcon at the top of a snag on the riverbank. We
were able to get a good long look at fairly close range, with
excellent lighting for photography, before it flew off. This makes
the third peregrine sighting here since September 4.

Don & I went on past the Leadvale boat ramp and found the first
shorebirds of the day - a flock of pectoral sandpipers. I brought
Jean Obrist back to that same area and more species had arrived.

Lake elevation is scheduled to drop quite a bit over the next few
days, so shoreline viewing will improve at Rankin, though the falcon
may continue to cause massive evacuations. The Leadvale flats can be
seen from Leadvale Road, but it's a long shot.

Partial list ( I expect that Don has more to add):
