Susie, You are extremely astute! It turns out that this is a bluebird box that I put up 3 years ago. Bluebirds investigated it several times and never used it. But , over the years, squirrels had gnawed open the hole (to about 3" dia.now), to store black walnuts. As such, I never attended to the box, but left it to the squirrels. Now I have GC Flycatchers and am thrilled. Is it a bluebird house? And has the hole been enlarged by another animal? Flycatchers require a 1-3/4 inch hole as opposed to bluebirds which require a 1-1/2" hole. How lucky you are to have them nesting! > Birders, > > I have a pair of Great-Crested Flycatchers nesting in a box I put up > in a large tree in front of my house.
