I made a couple stops this morning around Murfreesboro and had a few interesting findings. Cedar Waxwings have just appeared from somewhere. I had them everywhere I went this morning. Discovery Wetlands: -Over 500 cedar waxwings flew over the parking lot area over about 5 min, all coming from the east and landing in the trees around the boardwalk. Several flocks of 30-100+ birds came through. They were gorging themselves on the fruiting mulberry trees. -A singing Gray-cheeked Thrush is always a treat. -I found a feral cat sitting next to 6 wood duck ducklings that it had killed. The ducklings were only a few days old. Stones River Battlefield: not much but hordes of mosquitoes and 2 Kentucky Warblers (and a few cedar waxwings) Flooded fields on Kimbro Rd: Quite a bit of nice shorebird habitat (for middle TN anyway). Blue-winged teal and pied-billed grebes appear to have finally departed. Nice group of shorebirds present! Semipalmated Plover 8 Killdeer 6 Spotted Sandpiper 5 Solitary Sandpiper (Eastern) 2 Lesser Yellowlegs 2 Semipalmated Sandpiper 3 Least Sandpiper 51 Plus about 40 Cedar Waxwings Cheers, Scott Somershoe State Ornithologist Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency P.O.
