This has been a strange year in our hummingbird population. Our first Ruby-throated arrived in the normal range of the first of April and a few more slowly joined him but then some of them disappeared a week or two later and we only had 15-20 of them rather than the 70-80 we have had at this time of year since moving here in 2003. Females were noticeably fewer in number than the males. We thought one explanation might be our neighbors across the street who normally had out several hummer feeders selling their house and the new owner having none. But yesterday afternoon we had an influx of hummers, mostly females, and we estimate the numbers have increased to 40-50. We sure wish the dearth of warblers in our yard this spring could likewise suddenly be reversed with many latecomers.
