After driving to the end of Craig Cove Road in Knoxville yesterday morning
to look for the white pelican reported making appearances there and finding
only a great blue heron and some mallards in the Cove (only part of which is
visible from the road), I widened my search by driving to the nearby
Lakeshore greenway and searching the water viewable from there. I saw two
American wood ducks and 6 bufflehead but no pelican.
After walking for a while, I climbed the hill on my way back to the parking
lot and sat on a bench at the top under a tree for about half an hour and
practiced my sparrow skills (which need a lot of work) by watching the many,
many sparrows flitting around in the tree and surrounding brush and grass
and on the paved path. I found 5 species of sparrows. Most numerous were
field sparrows and song sparrows. One of the field sparrows even landed at
my feet and sat there for a few seconds. Also seen were a couple white
throated sparrows and a chipping sparrow. And I heard the song of a
savannah sparrow (which I immediately listened to on my Peterson CD upon
returning to my car to verify what it was).
