Kyker Bottoms WMA
South Blount County
Monday, Sept 5, 2005

Hi folks,

Tracey, Allan and I went to Kyker Bottoms for about 2 hours
yesterday. There are only a couple of small puddles now, and none of
the hoped-for shorebirds. Only a handful of Song Sparrows and Indigo
Buntings were around. We saw one, unidentified warlber whto whole
time. The fields are currently gorgeous with all kinds of late
summer flowers, along with some colorful seedheads. biting insects
were not an issue, and manager Bill Smith recently mowed a pathway
along about 1/2 the main dike, so walking was relatively easy for
this time of year.

The most interesting bird sightings were:

at least 60 Chimney Swifts overhead for much of the time
at least 35 Barn Swallows
3 Red-shouldered Hawks kettling and calling

Dragonflies and damselfflies were also a bit on the slow side with:
many Black Saddlebags
2 Twelve-spotted Skimmers
3 Common whitetails
2-3 Common Green Darners
1 Slaty Skimmer
1 Great Blue Skimmer
1 Prince Baskettail
1 unidentified large darner with a good amount of blue
4-5 Ebony Jewelwings
1 unidentified bluet

Charlie
