Sorry for being a bit late with this posting, but I just wanted to offer a quick summary of birds Alice Loftin and I observed at Kingston Steam Plant (Roane County) yesterday. We arrived at about 6:15 p.m. and birded hard for two hours, completely circling the big "shorebird pond." Highlights were: Double-crested Cormorant; Great Egret (8); Black-crowned Night-Heron (14, including at least 4 immatures); Wood Duck; Osprey (3); Spotted Sandpiper; Least Sandpiper (2); Tree Swallow; Brown-headed Nuthatch (2, in the pines along the dike separating the settling ponds from the mouth of the Emory River); Blue-gray Gnatcatcher; Blue Grosbeak (3); Grasshopper Sparrow (2). Also present were two Ruddy Shelducks, escapees from who-knows-where. I've seen this exotic species at a couple of places over the years--mostly city parks and the like.
