Jeff and TN-birders, Seeing this post reminded me of one of the many holes in my birding education, namely; how does one separate great-tailed from boat-tailed? Is the head/bill plane thing diagnostic? I notice the Kaufmann guide artwork implies that. I've always just used geography, but that obviously doesn't work for an out-of-range bird. I recall recent examples in east TN and my old hometown of Alexander City, AL, that were not unequivocally identified. Thanks for your help and, oh yeah, great find!
