For the first time in my life, I was able to record all seven of the woodpecker
species that are listed on the TWRA/TOS checklist of Tennessee species in one
day. The two species that are most difficult for me to find are the Hairy
Woodpecker and the Red-headed Woodpecker. Six woodpecker species were among 21
species found this morning on my property in Birchwood (Hamilton County). The
seventh species, a Red-headed Woodpecker, was among 17 species identified at
the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Birchwood (Meigs County) in the afternoon.
Other species included among the 21 species on my home property were 4
Tennessee Warblers and 5 Yellow-rumped Warblers. One Yellow-rumped Warbler and
one Palm Warbler were found at HWR. The numbers of each of the woodpecker
species seen at home today follow.
* Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers – 3
* Red-bellied Woodpeckers – 3 (3 were also seen at HWR.)
* Downy Woodpeckers – 2
* Hairy Woodpecker – 1
* Pileated Woodpecker – 1
* Northern Flicker – 4
