August was good yard birding at the top of Snow's Hill. We had 78 species with
15 of those being warblers. Cedar Waxwings, Summer and Scarlet Tanagers,
Baltimore Orioles, Wood and Hermit Thrushes, Least Pewee, Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher, and Blue Grosbeak were some of the notables. On the 27th we had 6
or 7 Common Nighthawks catching insects as they moved west. Red-eyed and
White-eyed Vireos were here all month and several Yellow-throated and a single
Warbling passed through also. The 15 warblers included the Yellow-breasted
Chat, Yellow, and Common Yellowthroat which have been here all summer, a couple
of Yellow-throated, Black-and-White, Northern Parula, Pine, Black-throated
Green, Blue-winged, Cerulean, American Redstart, Hooded, and Worm-eating. But
the two that really were so hold-your-breath exciting were the Canada on the
16th and a Mourning yesterday - our 138th yard bird. A good number of the
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have left but we still have 20-30 and, like the
Eastern Wood Pewee that has been here all summer, they attack anything that
moves.
