Ed Davis Fish Farm (Gibson Co.)
On the way home from work this morning I went by the Ed Davis Fish Farm
outside of Milan. There were several drained ponds, but only one with any
water left. This one pond had several of the common shorebird transients:
Killdeer
Greater Yellowlegs 2
Lesser Yellowlegs 16
Solitary Sandpiper 7
Spotted Sandpiper 2
Least Sandpiper 28
The highlight of the morning though were leisurely views of an AMERICAN
BITTERN working a ditch right beside the road. I spent about 20 minutes
watching and photographing this fascinating and impressive bird. I was
within 10 yards of the bird most of the time. I don't see very many of these
birds, but admittedly, I don't go looking for them much. I was scanning the
ditch with Bittern in mind, but was still surprised when one was feeding
pretty much in the open. Other highlights were a couple of male BOBOLINKS
bubbling high overhead, and singing CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and MARSH WREN.
Several Yellow Warblers were also singing in the area, and as usual lately,
Palm Warblers were everywhere.
I've posted several shots of the most cooperative American Bittern in my
Spring 2007 gallery, the shots start here:

Good Birding!!
