(west Knox County, TN) Amber and I went out into the woods behind our home just before sunset on Saturday (24 Jan 2004) to take a look for the Great Horned Owls. We missed seeing the owl flush from the nest as we approached and didn't see them at first but sat down on a log to see if they would turn up. We spotted a few feathers blowing in the breeze around the edge of the nest just as Wallace had said to look for. We couldn't detect any movement from the nest. Soon Amber spotted one of the adult owls sitting in the top of a small pine across the new "clearing". A brief aside here... the owl nest is on the edge of what used to be a thicket of tall pines about four houses up the ridge from ours. The Southern Pine Beetles had killed many of the pines by the time we moved in. Then, last May, a tornado came up the side of the ridge and leveled everything in a ~200ft-wide swath. (Fortunately only moderate damage to the houses it hit. Though impressive to see part of a grill that has been thrown OVER a house.) The nest is in one of the only large pines remaining. Anyway, the owl made a couple of approaches but would not go back to the nest with us there so we left. Turns out that you can just see the nest from our neighbors' yard. This morning (Mon, 26 Jan) before leaving for work, I saw one of the owls sitting tight on the nest. Suspicions are that they are incubating eggs. Still no return visits from the squealers. We will keep you posted. On other notes, we had another visit by the Palm Warbler on Sunday. Also, another Spring Cankerworm Moth and a camera-shy Tortricidae-looking moth. After having defeated the racoons for almost a year, Friday night they drug off the suet basket we had nailed to a hickory tree. The Brown Creepers and Yellow- bellied Sapsuckers were quite upset.
