Congratulations to Knoxville birders for turning in a whopping 233 checklists
in the Great Backyard Bird Count, about 4 times more than second place Johnson
City with 77 checklists.
Although Tennessee was not in the top 10 states for GBBC participation,
Knoxville is currently 7th in the nation.
Jonesborough turned out to be the biggest small town in state with 27
checklists submitted. However, a total of 49 species were counted in
Jonesborough, one less than Johnson City. Although Knoxville reported 77
species, they were bested in this area by Crossville with 86, Cookeville with
84 and Estil Springs with 80 species from only 17 checklists, qualifying it as
the early spring-late winter hotspot of the state. Where is Estil Springs?
Stand up and take a bow.
Sullivan County put in another sub-par performance with only 11 checklists in
Bristol, 8 in Kingsport and only one from South Holston Lake, normally THE
hotspot of Upper East Tennessee.
While it can be argued that Bristol is in two states and the BBC had their
annual trip to Burke's Garden this weekend, that still left three days of
birding where they could have held up their end of the state. Like the Chicago
Cubs, the BBC will probably be lamenting about next year, and I hope they mean
it.
