Hello all!

This weekend was very exciting for us, but also very COLD! We counted 17
species in our backyard! I have to share with you guys a quick story. We
have a young American Finch that we believe to be mostly blind. As I was
filling the feeders in the snow on Saturday, I noticed the bird didn't move
at all sitting on top of my water feeder. As I got closer, the bird tried
to move...bobbed its head--it actually jumped on my finger and then flew
away not making it very far. All weekend long I would check the "backyard
ground and feeders" before letting my three Jack Russell Terrors out. Each
time I would find the little bird on the ground and would proceed to "shew"
it off (knowing that my dogs would go straight for it).
On Sunday, my husband and I were watching through our kitchen window as the
bird hadn't moved from the ground for about two hours....and all of a sudden
all of the birds everywhere took off. A few minutes after that, a male
NORTHERN HARRIER appeared on our fence within 10-15 feet of us, looking
straight at the little finch on the ground. This was very exciting for us
as we had never seen this bird AND it was in OUR backyard!! Was it the end
for the little blind finch? We watched the Harrier a few minutes as he
moved to a different location on our fence while biting our lips, then the
Harrier took off in another direction. SHEW! What excitement for our Great
Backyard Bird Count!!!!!
