Fred, See the message I copied below from the Tennessee list this morning. It seems unlikely, but I wonder!? I am forwarding this to the Tennesse list and to the original poster, just in case. Jason Baumgardner Roswell, GA A trained Red-tailed Hawk escaped from the Dollywood exhibit in Sevier County on Saturday. Unfortunately, the bird is not expected to survive if not recovered. If you're birding this area, it might help to keep an eye out for a bird with leg tethers. http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=77362 Good birding, Angela M. I've had three glimpses of a large raptor cruising through our back yard in the last 24 hours. While it is most likely either a Red-tail or Red-shouldered Hawk, which are both regular if not daily visitors, this fellow felt larger and heavier. Had a very slow and steady wing beat, and a slow glide, and gave the impression of being pretty uniformly brown. Saw it land a perch at sunset last night, about 100 feet away and approx. 30 feet up, but it was completely backlit by bright twilight sky, so had no chance at details before it flew off. Had a tail-on view this morning as it glided over the yard into the neighboring trees, but if it landed, I couldn't find it once I grabbed binocs. The most curious of all the impressions from these briefs sitings is that there's something dangling from one of the bird's legs. Maybe it's picked up nesting material, but I'm used to raptors carrying this sort of stuff cross-ways, rather than haning down, and it seemed too small for prey, unless it's feeding on snakes. Which leaves me wondering about a tether of some sort. Are there any parks around here with raptor shows that are missing a bird? I'll keep watching, and will let you know if I get any better looks at him/her. Fred Land Decatur - Scott/Clairmont/N.
