Barry has asked two excellent questions=2E With respesct to the cowbird ques=
tion, I'd like to add a question of my own: does a cowbird raised by, say, a=
 sparrow, tend to seek out and parasitize the species that successfully pare=
nted it?

Subject: [TN-Bird] Questions for the group

Last night at the NTOS meeting it was the time to ask questions about birds=20=

that you were afraid to ask=2E I have thought of two since last night and th=
ey=20
are the following:
Are there any mimic migrants who pick up the songs of tropical endemics and=20=

then sing some of those songs here when they return? This would include any=20=

birds native to North America north of the Mexican border - so even possible=20=

mimic migrants in the western USA would be candidates for my question=2E

And I know how much some birders "love" cowbirds ;-) So I'll ask this=20
question - Have there been any studies done as to what happens that causes c=
owbirds=20
(or actually any other nest parasites - cuckoos, honeyguides, etc) to sudden=
ly=20
realize they are cowbirds and not the same species as the host parents? I am=20=

wondering if some kind of DNA is dormant within them and maybe it suddenly=20=

becomes activated? Or as they grow, does their change in appearance cause th=
e=20
parents to drive them away?

Okay those are the questions that I would have asked, had I thought of them=20=

at the time=2E
