July 31, 2004
Mosheim, Greene Co., TN

At 6:42 p.m. this evening, I found a Eurasian Collared-Dove in Mosheim
community in western Greene County.

The bird was present on a light wire along Highway 348 0.3 mile from its
intersection with Highway 11-E. After I had viewed the bird for about
two minutes, it flew south across the road and appeared to perch a short
distance away. I then proceeded to the closest vantage point I could
find to this area, which turned out to be the back parking lot of West
Greene Free Will Baptist Church. The church can be reached by
proceeding along Highway 348 about half a mile from the point where I
found the dove, turning left onto Shackleford Road, proceeding for about
a quarter mile or less, and then turning left into the parking lot.

From the church parking lot, I found the bird on a wire near a second
Eurasian Collared-Dove. Both birds afforded excellent views for several
minutes. I was able to see the dark primary tips, the dark undertail
coverts, the squarish tail, and the collar on the hindneck. I was also
able to note the color (paler than that of a Mourning Dove), judge
overall size and proportions (larger and chunkier than a Mourning Dove),
and to note the lack of wing whistle when one bird flew.

As far as I know, this is the first time the species has been observed
in Greene County. However, it should be noted that the spot where it
appeared today is no more than ten miles from Bull's Gap, in Hawkins
County, where the species was reported on TN-Bird in June.
