Wednesday afternoon; May 11, 2011 I had a neat experience when I was coming back to work at lunchtime. I topped the little hill on my residential street and saw 2 somethings sitting on the edge of the pavement. I first thought they were squirrels so I swerved over, but as I passed I decided it looked more like the outline of a small owl. I stopped and looked back; amazingly it still looked like the outline of an owl, so I got out of my car and walked back. Mama Screech Owl flew as I approached; however, Junior, a little grey ball of fluff with big owl eyes, remained on the street. Fearing the next car might not see the bird, I picked the fledgling up and carried it a short distance to a line of bushes in the direction that mama owl had flown. I then left with a prayer that mama would come back. Amazingly, I have not heard an Eastern Screech Owl in my neighborhood so I have no idea where she may have nested. Must have been close though, because Junior was just a ball of fluff. I'm still marveling at my luck for holding, ever so briefly, a fledgling screech owl in my hands.
