3-17-07 Percy Priest Lake Davidson, Wilson and Rutherford counties NTOS had a brisk but beautiful day for a field trip to different areas of Percy Priest Lake, southeast of Nashville. A couple newcomers got a few lifers like Swamp Sparrow, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and Golden-crowned Kinglet. Several Common Loons in breeding plumage were especially enjoyed by all from the dam. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Stones River Greenway below Percy Priest Dam set a new early date record for the Nashville Area. The previous date was March 23, 1982. A Winter Wren and Brown Creeper were also seen there. Other highlights and the firsts of the season included one OSPREY at Fall Creek Recreation Area, one BARN SWALLOW and several PURPLE MARTINS at Bryant Grove Recreation Area, and one EASTERN MEADOWLARK below the dam. There were also three occupied Great Blue Heron nests on an island in the mouth of Fall Creek, Percy Priest Lake. And several Bonaparte's Gulls continue to be seen out from the Lamar Hill Recreation Area. The Hooded Mergansers have departed Couchville Lake, and were reported to have been gone for several weeks now. But one PURPLE MARTIN was seen there today.
