We canoed this afternoon on upper Douglas Lake from Walters Bridge (Hwy 25E) halfway upriver to the Leadvale boat ramp. Pre-adult bald eagles were out in force, competing for carp kill in the shallows, and spiralling in a thermal above Ten Islands. Waterfowl, shorebirds & great blues foraged in and along marshy shoals; we saw and heard songbirds along the treeliine above the shore. Best birds: Wood duck (39, mostly in mating pairs) Great blue heron (38) Double-crested cormorant (100+) Green heron (2 - FOS for us) Osprey (6) Bald eagle (6) Red-shouldered hawk American kestrel American coot (5) Greater yellowlegs (5) Lesser yellowlegs Least sandpiper (16) Tree, barn & cliff swallows Brown thrasher American pipit Yellow-rumped warbler (5) Prothonotary warbler Technical note: We were powered through deep water by our new trolling motor and deep cycle battery ($250 at Bass Pro Shops), a quiet and efficient necessity for extensive flatwater birding. Otherwise, we got plenty of exercise on the windy water. Douglas lake should begin to flood Rankin Bottoms by next weekend.
