25 January 2004 Middlebrook Lake, Sullivan County (ML); Osceola Island Recreation Area, Sullivan County (OIRA); Cherokee Lake, Jefferson County (CL); Douglas Lake, Jefferson and Sevier County (DL); western Greene County Linda Northrop, Alice Loftin, and I logged about 275 miles today birding lakes and fields in northeast Tennessee. Weather conditions were often unfavorable for viewing, but we nonetheless recorded some notable species. Here's a summary: Common Loon (DL--Sevier County); Pied-billed Grebe (3 ML); Black-crowned Night-Heron (27 DL tailwaters, perched in trees along the shore waiting for a smorgasbord of fish to pour through the dam as electricity was generated); Snow Goose (19 Greene County (10 blue, 9 white)); Mallard (455 Greene County, 150+ ML, 3 OIRA); American Black Duck (18 Greene County, 1 ML); American Wigeon (7 OIRA); Ring-necked Duck (62 OIRA); Common Goldeneye (female OIRA); Bufflehead (160 OIRA); Hooded Merganser (2 ML); Red-breasted Merganser (8 CL--Jefferson County, viewed from the parking lot at the restroom area); Northern Harrier (7 Greene County); Wild Turkey (48 Greene County); American Coot (12 ML); Ring-billed Gull (462 Jefferson County, 350+ ML, 200 Greene County, 113 Sevier County, 8 Washington County, 3 Grainger County); Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sevier County); Hairy Woodpecker (OIRA); Winter Wren (OIRA); Savannah Sparrow (5 Greene County); Rusty Blackbird (23 Greene County).
