Blount County
During the Fall Count yesterday the 18th I found a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in a
weedy field on the south side of McGhee Tyson Airport. It was seen at close
range for at least 30 seconds, probably more but was only seen once more very
briefly. It had well defined facial markings and gray nape, very buffy overall
including the rump and lower back. There were no Chippies present in this field
but 9 were seen during the course of the day, all in open roadside yards with
trees nearby. There were only a few other sparrows in the field including
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, which also bred there this spring. Another possible
Ammodramus was seen, but only in flight. One other tailless sparrow was
observed in flight on two occasions. MEADOWLARKS and one BOBOLINK were also
seen.
This field is located on the south side of the airport off of Hunt Rd along the
new road into the cargo area. If you were travelling south on Alcoa Highway
(129), exit at Hunt Rd but at the stop sign go straight across Hunt Rd and the
field is on the left.
