Yesterday, I heard a "thump" at the large window over the sink in my house in nw Shelby County. I looked outside, expecting a casualty. As soon as I opened the door, a dishelved-looking but healthy Yellow-bellied Sapsucker flew up from the leaf pile (thankfully, I had not got round to sweeping it away) on the deck under the window. As he (she?) gained altitude, another sapsucker came over the edge of the roof in hot pursuit. The new arrival chased the collider across the yard into a Tulip Poplar on the other side of the fence, screeching all kinds of vicious imprecations. I grabbed for the binox just in time to see one bird (presumably the pursuer) grab the other bya wing and hold it suspended eighty feet off the ground. The second bird eventually broke free and flew away into the woods. I presume that the window-crasher had originally been pursued by the other right into the window and that the second had waited until the first recovered to resume thechase. Why two Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers would engage in combat, especially in a wintering area, I cannot imagine.
