Just outside my breakfast room window is an Oregon Grape Holly, less than three feet from the window. In the center of this shrub is a Cardinal's nest. The female has been sitting patiently on the nest for many days. Once, a week or so ago, when she was absent, I quickly checked and found two speckled eggs in the nest. A few days ago I noticed the male hopping in with food in his bill. He perched on the edge of the nest and fed a chick. The next day I again briefly checked out the nest. I saw only one chick and no eggs. Within a couple days I noticed the chick had rapidly grown to a huge size. I was afraid, given that at least one egg had gone missing, that I was looking at a Brown Cowbird chick. Last evening, the chick was big enough to be standing on the edge of the nest. His large round body and head with two droopy-looking eyes seemed to be staring at me through the window. However, this chick had a definite "mohawk" on his crown, looking much like a nascent crest. I guess it is a Cardinal chick after all. Kevin Bowden Nashville-Davidson Co.
