This afternoon there were two Great egrets visible from the Miser Station bridge off Louisville Road in Blount County. One bird had orange wing tags on both wings. I was too far away to see if there was any other markings on the tags. A single Black-crowned night heron was visible near Louisville Marina. I also briefly visited the heron rookeries I check for the wading bird survey and observed birds on and around nests at all six locations. At Phelps pond a number of birds appeared to be displaying by either arching the head upward and backwards, or by extending the head and neck straight down while standing on the edge of the nest. I haven't visited any nesting sites this early and am not familiar with GBHeron territorial or breeding display. There were hundreds of Ring-billed gulls on the ice or in the water from Miser Station Bridge, Louisville Point Park, and Scenic Point. I didn't see any waterfowl other than Canada geese, Mallards and Coots.
